Although there are many publications on children with special needs, studies on siblings of these children are almost non-existent in our country. We hope to remind siblings, who are referred to as “forgotten children” even in the literature, that they are not alone...
Although many publications exist about children with autism, studies focusing on the experiences and needs of their siblings remain very limited. However, autism affects not only the individual but the entire family system, and siblings are an important part of this process.
This book, written by Psk. Dr. Selin Atasoy, was prepared to draw attention to the emotional and social experiences of siblings of children with autism. It aims to help siblings understand the complex emotions they experience, remind them that they are not alone, and support families in managing this process in a healthier way.
Selin Atasoy was born in Ordu in 1975. She completed her secondary and high school education at İzmir 60th Year Anatolian High School and received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Developmental Psychology at Ege University.
For many years, Atasoy has worked with both children on the autism spectrum and children with typical development. Her work includes national and international studies, conference presentations, training programs for parents and professionals, as well as numerous translations and adaptations in the field.
Drawing on more than 30 years of professional field experience, this book aims to highlight the experiences of siblings of children with autism and shed light on their emotional world. Often referred to in the literature as “the forgotten children,” siblings are reminded through this book that they are not alone, while families are encouraged to build healthier communication within the family system.
The book was first published in 2011.
